Safety & Security |

The Delta Region and most tournament & event hosts do not provide security to protect individuals or their property while attending Region events. Parents, players & spectators are encouraged to use common sense in assessing the level of risk at each venue. Valuables should be removed from sight in a vehicle and expensive items should not be left unattended in a gym. Liability insurance issued through USA Volleyball for sanctioned events is primarily to protect the owners of the building (and allow the use of the facility), not personal property claims.
Personal security is also a concern. Please make arrangements with other parents to pick up players from practices & events if the parent is delayed. To ask a coach to wait until a parent arrives after the scheduled end of a practice (or to leave an athlete waiting outside a locked gym) is at best inconsiderate and is not acceptable. Being a part of an organized youth sports program requires a committment from the entire family, not just the athlete and coach.
Coaches may be occupied with other practices or gym duties and cannot monitor the activities of athletes before or after their practices at the gym. It is recommended that athletes use caution in public areas. Many junior volleyball clubs have implemented the "rule of 3" in which three athletes must go together when unaccompanied by a parent...even if just a trip to a public restroom at a tournament or practice site. Teenage players who are driving (which is scary enough) should be accompanied to their cars while at a practice or competition gym by other parents or players. Parents cannot expect the club's coaching staff to ensure their child's safety from the time they leave home until they return. Parents must take an active role in cautioning their daughter appropriately and utilizing other parents & players to help avoid a tragedy. | | |
